request a JSML COPY?  JSML EVENT?

---------------------------------------------------------->

Ok, here are the questions and answers:

1. What is JSML?

JSML stands for Jewish Singles Mailing List.  The list began sometime in
early 1992.  Today there are over 500 JSML members.  Jewish Singles are
welcome to use this service to find other Jewish Singles.  This is a FREE
service offered on an "as is" basis by the moderator.

2. How does JSML work?

The way this service works is simple.  Interested Jewish Singles "POST" to
JSML by one of two methods.  The best way to "POST" to JSML is to start your
Internet browser and access the JSML JAVA Post applet.  This JAVA form will
allow you to enter and submit your "POST".  As a last resort to "POST"ing you
can send an Email directly to HillelS@Erols.com with the JSML TEMPLATE typed
in by hand using the subject, "JSML: POST".  The template is given below in
#12.  You will receive a confirmation, and both lists (mensches and maidels)
if the entry is accepted.  Two weeks later you can use the JSML JAVA Request
applet to browse new entries one or both lists.  Your entry will stay on the
list for about 8 months and then it will be deleted.  If you would like to
update or remove your "POST"ing, then see #5 for a list of JSML Email subject
commands.  You are encouraged to contact others on the list whose entries
look like that would be a good match.  Do not wait for them to contact you.
Likewise, it is strictly inappropriate to mass mail others on the list and
will not be permitted.  Only contact others on the list if they look like a
good match.

3. Who moderates this list?

The moderator of this list is me, Hillel Steinberg.  I am a graduate of
the University of Maryland (graduate and undergraduate work completed in CS),
and have this account as a CES/JDS Alumni.  For as long as this account exists
I will continue JSML.  Although I am married, I do wish this kind of service
were available in my earlier college years.  The Internet is a good way to
share, and Jewish Singles should not be left out!

4. Who can use this service?

The name of this list is JSML.  Thus this list is ONLY for JEWISH SINGLES.
There are other singles lists available on various Internet newsgroups such as
'soc.singles' or the new group 'alt.personals'.  By 'Jewish', either you are
Jewish by birth (your mother is Jewish), or you have converted to Judaism (or
are in the process of) through an ordained Rabbi.  I am frequently asked if
there is a mix of location and ages on JSML, and the answer is a definite YES!
JSML is not just for young Jewish singles in the United States.

5. How do I communicate with JSML?  What other SUBJECTS can I use when mailing
   JSML?

Commands to JSML are sent by either using the Internet JAVA forms described
above, or by sending Email to HillelS@Erols.comwith various commands in the
subject line.  Each command in the subject begins with a 'JSML:' to distinguish
the mail from non-JSML mail.  Some commands (such as the 'JSML: COPY' command)
only require a subject, and no message body.  If, however, your mailer does not
give you the option of providing a 'SUBJECT', then you can put your subject in
the BODY of the message as the first line.

The JSML commands are as follows:

"JSML: POST"    - This is the Email subject that you use to join JSML if you
can't get the JSML JAVA Post applet to work.  The body of the Email MUST be
the JSML TEMPLATE shown later in this FAQ with 10 fields.  The ONLY entry
you may leave blank is the "Optional" field.  Yes, that's right, fill in
the Age and Location too.  The Likes/Dislikes field is NOT the same as the
interests field.  This is also answered in this FAQ.  These fields were
chosen carefully to help singles narrow down the possibilities.  Whether
you consider them important or not, others have confirmed that my choices
are very useful.  You can omit the last name if necessary.  The "Optional"
field is often left blank.  Obviously, I didn't ask every question in the
template.  Here is your ONLY chance to improvise.  Use it!  Please only
post if you are a JEWISH SINGLE, and if you have completed the ENTIRE
template.  POSTINGS stay on the list for about 8 months.  They start at
the bottom of the list until they are pruned off the top of the list.
JSML does not keep copies of postings which are deleted.  This means you
should keep a copy of your original posting and UPDATE it often.

"JSML: COPY"    - Use this subject when you have ALREADY posted to JSML
and you would like a copy of the latest list.  This command should only be
used if you cannot cannot get the JSML JAVA Request applet to work.
Although there is no limit to the number of times that you may issue the
"COPY" command, please do so at most once a week.  JSML usually receives
about 10-50 posts a week, and it takes a bit to format them correctly.  No
copies of the JSML list will be sent to you after you POST unless you
explicitly use this option.  Both the mensch and maidels lists will be
sent to you unless you specify in the body of the COPY request that you
only want one.  This is the ONLY way you can limit the size of list, sorry.
I have the keyword "KPART" located at  the beginning of each section, so
you can use an editor to search for the start of the area you want to look
at.  Both lists are in chronological order, so you need to search to the
end of the lists to find the latest.  For those of you who find that the
lists you get back are truncated, you need to write "Please split the
lists into pieces" in the body of the COPY request.  This way I will be
able to make the size of the lists more favorable to your mailer.

"JSML: UPDATE"  - Use this subject to update your previous JSML entry.  In
the body of the mail, include an UPDATED and COMPLETE (do not skip ANY
fields) JSML template.  If your update is accepted, then your old posting
is removed, and the new one is placed at the bottom of the new list.
By moving the entry to the bottom of the list, you give yourself more
time before the posting is pruned of the top of the list.  Therefore,
it is a good idea to UPDATE your entry at least once every five months.

"JSML: REMOVE"  - Use this subject to remove your entry from JSML.  Because
the adding of an entry is time consuming, please do not exercise this
option unless it is a permanent thing.

"JSML: COMMENT" - Use this subject when you have a comment for the JSML
    moderator.

"JSML: QUESTION"- Use this subject when you have a question for the JSML
moderator that is not answered in this FAQ.

"JSML: TEMPLATE - Use this subject to request an up-to-date JSML template.
The template is included at the bottom of this FAQ to save you the step
of requesting it with: "JSML: TEMPLATE".

"JSML: FAQ"     - Use this subject to receive this FAQ.

"JSML: EVENT"   - Use this subject to post an EVENT to JSML, which will be
in turn accessible to the other JSML members using the JSML JAVA Request
applet. It is not supposed to be used to RECEIVE current JS events.  If
the event is not clearly a Jewish Singles event by description, then
please provide a note to me explaining how the event is a JS event.
Otherwise, I may decided not to post the event, for fear of offending
someone.  The following 4 fields MUST be at the top of each EVENT
posting: Location, Data/Time, Event Name, and Event contact info.  The
ordering is important.  Many folks have requested that the Location field
come first.  After these 4 fields, it is up to you as to how you describe
    the Jewish Singles event.

6. X doesn't have an Email account, but Y will let X use their account.  Can X
POST/COPY to JSML through Y's account?  Z doesn't have an Email account or
a friend with one! Can Z still use JSML?

Sure, I don't have any problem with this.  Please put a special note
in the 'Optional' field of the POSTing template explaining that all mail
to Y's address should have the Subject: "In care of X" or something
similar.  That way Y doesn't get confused and respond to X's mail.  You
should also mention this in the body of your mail for all other requests
(i.e., "JSML: COPY"), so that I know how to respond to your mail.

It's hard to imagine a person without direct or indirect access to the
Internet these days.  Although it is rare, I can only suggest that Z
get Internet access, find a friend with access, or simply use a free
access service in conjunction with a free mailing service (i.e., Juno).

7. I got a JSML response, but it was incomplete.  Did I do something wrong?

Probably not.  Your mailer may have cut off the listings.  In this case,
when you specify a "JSML: COPY", also mention in the body of the message
that you would like the list 'SPLIT' into pieces.  I have a script to
assist me in doing this.  It isn't pretty, but it works.

8. The JSML list is rather long.  While I know this a good thing, is there
a way I can reduce the size of it?  Why do we need to receive both lists?

There are a variety of JSML members.  Some are interested in meeting only
Jewish Singles from one list.  Others are interested in both lists.  For
   example:

You are a Jewish Single and you just moved to Iowa.  You'd like to meet
Jewish Singles with similar interests to help ease your way into the new
     area.

     Or better yet:

You are interested in one list, but you know a friend who would be
     interested in the other list.

It is for reasons like this that I send both the 'mensches' and 'maidels'
lists by default.  That is not to say that you can't request just one of
the lists.  If you want only one of the two lists, make sure to mention this
in the body of the "JSML: COPY" request.  You cannot ask for ONE of the lists
if you also require it to be SPLIT.  SPLIT copies are described above.

I trim both lists periodically.  Typically, I like to keep the postings
to no more than a 8 months.  Thus, you need to submit a "JSML: UPDATE"
once in a while to ensure that you remain on the list.

9. How do I navigate the different lists easily?

I put a keyword, "KPART" at the beginning of each section.  With your local
editor, you should be able to move from one section to another easily by
searching on this keyword.  As more and more folks are learning how to
navigate the Web, my JSML JAVA Request applet will have new functionality
   added to facilitate searches.

10. Why are there more mensches than maidels on the list?

Right now, we are running at about a 1-1.3 in favor of the mensches.  I
encourage the single maidels to join JSML and make this a healthy 1:1 ratio.
In time, as internet becomes populated with the masses instead of mostly the
technical folks, this, I ration will even out.  This is already the general
trend.  In '92 the ratio was a solid 1:4!

11. Do I really have to be Jewish to use this service?

Yes, this list is for those singles who were born Jewish or converted to
Judaism.  There are other lists and newsgroups with different goals, but
this is, after all, JSML, 'Jewish' Singles Mailing List.  In every country
of the world (except Israel), the Jewish people are a minority.  It is
hard for Jewish Singles to meet others with similar interests.  I hope JSML
will fill this void.  There are no exceptions for 'Single' either.  This
list isn't for those who are "in the process of divorce".  From time to
time I get letters asking if they are the first non-Jew to want to join the
singles list.  I can assure you that you will not be the first, and if you
want more information about others like you, please write me.

12. So what does the JSML template look like?

For those of you who cannot get the JSML JAVA Post applet to work, the
template is shown below.  When filling out the template, keep the words,
and alignment as close to this as possible.  This will save me the trouble
of reformatting your post when it arrives.  I ONLY RECEIVE ABOUT THREE HAND
TYPED POSTINGS A YEAR WHICH DON'T REQUIRE ANY REFORMATTING!  Each field
MUST be provided, except for the "Optional:" field.  Each field is there
for a reason.  Fill in your birthday, not current age in the "Age:" field.
This way your entry will always be up-to-date.  Fill in the current date
as: MM/DD/YY.  For multiple Email addresses, stack them as shown in the
Bill Clinton example below.  Making a mistake here may mean that you will
be unreachable, making your entry invalid.  If I discover that your address
is no longer valid, you are removed from the list.  This includes anonymous
accounts (i.e., those from Finland). Provide data that is as informative
as possible.  For example, under the "Jewish Background:" section, DO NOT
simply put, "Not religious" or "Conservative".  A more INFORMATIVE example
would be, "Converted to Judaism.  Have been to Israel with strong Zionistic
feelings. Keep Kosher, but not Sabbath.  Very active in campus 'Hillel'
house. Ashkenazi.  Cohen."  You get the idea.  Again, all fields are
MANDATORY except the 'Optional:' field.  For example, many people forget to
include the 'Posted On:' field.  If any of the information you provide is
found to be incorrect, then again, I may remove your posting from the list.
If you are concerned about giving out too much information, it is permitted
to WITHHOLD a LAST NAME.  The information in parenthesis are format
information, and should NOT appear in your submitted template.  Example,
"Posted On: 01/21/67", not "Posted On: (MM/DD/YY) 01/21/67"!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted On: (MM/DD/YY)

Email:

Gender: (M/F)

Name:

Age: (MM/DD/YY)

Location:

Interests:

Jewish Background:

Likes/Dislikes:

Optional:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

13. Ok, I have the template, how do I fill it out?

This is sort of like asking, "I need to deposit into my bank, what keys
do I press on the ATM machine?"  I can't suggest a possible solution to
your problem because each bank requires different keystrokes to get the
same job done.  I suggest you ask your local computer guru (read: geek)
how to enter the information into the template.  Worst comes to worse,
do not fill out the template, simply create it as you go.  For example,
just begin a reply to HillelS@Erols.comand type something like:

    Posted On: 01/01/98

    Email: bill@whitehouse.capitol.gov
           hillary@whitehouse.capitol.gov
           algore@motel6.com
           http://www.no.new.taxes/propaganda.html

    Gender: M

    Name: William Clinton

    Age: 07/23/53

    Location: Washington, DC.

Interests: Jogging, Speeches, Golf, TV, Winning Elections....

    Jewish Background:
Wear keepah frequently, have visited Israel many times, friends
with Yitzhak Rabin.  Not observant, but have recently become more
    interested in the Jewish Culture.

    Likes/Dislikes:
Likes women with strong wills who are not afraid to voice themselves or
change their hair style daily.  Also likes traveling and golfing.
Dislike smokers, women who make allegations against me, and inhalers.

    Optional:
I'm tall, a bit overweight, but I'm a good catch.  I have a secure job,
at least for the next 4 years.  I have a young daughter, but I'm open
to having more kids in the future.

Notice that each field is FORMATTED correctly.  Begin with a capitol,
colon separations, space after colon, etc.  Hey, this IS important!  If
you don't do it, then I have to do it.  And, I don't like formatting text.

14. I'm not sure about JSML yet.  Can I just get a copy to see if I would be
    interested?

JSML cannot make individual exceptions, otherwise many JS's would simply
ask for copies and not post, thus missing an opportunity of a lifetime.
Let's say that a mensch and maidel are perfect for each other, but they
decide not to post and only receive copies.  Then they will never know
about each other.  JSML's policy is to avoid this.  Once you post, you will
receive a copy of the list automatically.  If at some point later you feel
uncomfortable about being on the list you may Remove yourself.  Sound
   reasonable?

15. I'm interested in posting to this service, but I do not want to end up in
one of the newsgroups, i.e. soc.singles or soc.culture.jewish!

JSML has very little to do with newsgroups, other than the fact that I
described JSML on these newsgroups in the past.  If you post to JSML your
entry will NOT appear on any of the newsgroups.

16. Are entries and COPY requests for JSML screened by anyone?

Yes, each entry is screened by me, the moderator.  I have three criteria
that each entry must pass.  It must be completely filled out.  It must be a
serious entry request by an eligible Jewish Single person.  I have one other
criteria also, but now that wouldn't be fair if I told you what it was?
Suffice it to say, on the internet, there are no guarantees about who is at
the other end of an Email account.  This is unfortunate, and is probably
the only down side to the Internet.  Therefore, screening is a necessary
FIRST STEP that I take.  All anti-semitic remarks will be dealt with
   accordingly.

17. I got the FAQ, but I didn't directly request it?

The most common reasons for receiving this FAQ in order of frequency is:

   A) You requested it!
   B) You asked a question, but didn't realize that this FAQ answers it.
   C) You were never on the list!  You must POST first.
   D) You posted, but did not do so in the format that JSML requires.
Please follow the TEMPLATE exactly as show above!  This is not a
      LISTSERVice which many people assume.
   E) You were on the list, but your entry has not been updated in a while (say
over 8 months).  Post again first before requesting a copy of the lists.
You may also be removed from the list if your Email address is invalid.
JSML does not keep copies of postings which are deleted, so you must
save your original posting and update it often.
   F) You are on the list, but you are using a different account when you i
issue JSML commands.  Use the original account when issuing JSML commands.
   G) You misused a JSML command.  For example, you used 'JSML: EVENT'
expecting to receive a JS event list, when in fact this command is for
      POSTING JS events ONLY!
   H) This FAQ was posted to one of the Usenet Newsgroups.
   I) The JSML Moderator screwed up.  Who me?

18. I'm xx years old, am I too young/old to be on JSML?  Are there others
    on the list my age?

Of course you're not too old/young for JSML.  I have been getting this
question for a long time, so I decided to add it to the FAQ.  On this list
we have all ages, and this list does not claim to specialize in any way.
As long as you are Jewish and Single, as described above, you are welcome
to join JSML.  OK?  So, most likely there ARE others your age on the list.

19. I sent a 'Subscribe' in the body of my mail, shouldn't this
work?  JSML is a LISTSERVice isn't it?

No, this is JSML. Jewish Singles Mailing List, but not a LISTSERVice.
There are several reasons why I chose not to use such a model for my
service.  Most LISTSERVers are automated, but I prefer the moderated
version so I can answer questions, and scan all information for missing
or invalid data.  Also, the services of this mailing list are almost
entirely based on User Requests.  The only feature of this service
which generates an unsolicited message to its members is the EVENT
subject.  This command disperses information according to the same
paradigm that LISTSERVers employ.  I do everything by hand around here,
so be understanding if there is a delay in response.

20. I sent in a JSML message with a correct JSML subject and everything,
but it's been over 24 hours and no response.  What's the deal?

The question is partly answered by the answer to the question above.  This
list is moderated manually.  I scan each and every request.  POSTings
which are not formatted correctly have to be formatted.  FAQ and Copy
requests stream in daily, and I don't always have the time to answer
them.  EVENT dispersion requests take a good deal of time, and I get
a lot of mailing rejects which bounce, and have to be handled separately.
Please be kind.  I have am a NEW parent, and I have less time to moderate
this service than I did as a College student when JSML began.

21. What is the difference between Interests and Likes/Dislikes?  Can't I
    just put "See Interests" ?

First of all, I see the "See Interests" frequently, and it is unfortunate.
There are only 10 fields, and most fields do not allow for creativity
(e.g. Age, Email, Location, etc...).  In the Interests field you put
your favorite hobbies, sports, activities, hopes, and aspirations.  This
is your chance to be creative and describe YOURSELF.  The Likes/Dislikes
field is just as important because it complements the Interests field.
Interests describe YOUR interests, and likes/dislikes describe what you're
looking/not looking for in your SIGNIFICANT OTHER.  Your interests could be
"Sailing", whereas your Likes/Dislikes might be: "Likes extroverted older
women ages 35-40, Dislikes smokers, women who aren't in shape, and women
afraid of trying new things".  From this example, it is clear that the two
fields are not interchangeable.  Please be creative and informative in
BOTH of these fields.  Oh, and I get many responses stating that they do
not have dislikes.  Imagine that.  If that were true, you'd be married
already to your first date.  Why, because you couldn't think of a reason
    not to!  Right?

22. How do I view the JSML list?  The list is huge, and my computer says that
    it won't open it, help!

This is a tough question.  I'm don't have the time to answer most of these
questions because they really depend on your situation.  Seriously, the
purpose of JSML is to GET THE LIST TO IT'S MEMBERS.  The ideal way is to
use the JSML JAVA Request applet.  If this doesn't work, Email
HillelS@Erols.com and request a copy of the list using the "JSML: COPY"
command as the subject.  The returned list is usually so large that you
need to download it to your Personal Computer first, and then view it using
a robust word processor.  You should view it first by using your Email
application.  This doesn't always work.  For example, I've been made
aware that AOL sees the HUGE mail and decides that your only option is to
down-load it first.  If this is the case, then do it!  Once it is on your
local system, you need a robust word processor (such as Microsoft Word)
because many small text editors have length restrictions.  If you can't
view the file in your Email application or download it, then contact your
ISP or a local computer guru.  The chances are that I really can't help
    you at this point anyway!

23. Very pretty Web pages.  Unfortunately, because of the coloring scheme,
I can't see anything when I print out the pages.  How do you expect me
to fill out the TEMPLATE if I can't see how to?

Actually, I really am upset by this question.  First of all, a little
experimentation would have gotten you the results you wanted.  Secondly,
there is NO reason you need to print out the FAQ to read it.  If you
need to, then you should either find another browser, or upgrade your
computer.  You don't need to kill a tree to join this service.  In any
event, here are some possible work-a-rounds besides using a different
browser (Mosaic, Netscape, or Internet Explorer).  One solution is to
select the entire FAQ as TEXT, and then copy/paste the text into a word
processor.  This is trivial to do, and has been tested.  Another solution
is to change the coloring scheme employed by your browser and then try
to print again.  A final way to do this is to save the page text as a
file (Netscape and other browsers allow you to do this), and then
examine it with your favorite word processor.

24. Are there web pages to submit a JSML POST?  How about a Web page to
request a JSML COPY? JSML EVENT?

Actually, there is a Web page for POST requests, and a Web page for COPY
EVENT, and TEMPLATE requests.  These are new pages, but they should have
most of the bugs worked out.  The JSML JAVA POST page is at:

               /JDS-1985/jform.html

Both web pages require that your Browser support JAVA.  The latest versions
of both Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer should work with these
pages.  The use of these pages is ENCOURAGED because they are there to
save the moderator time in handling the POST.  The JAVA form performs many
checks on the user input and does not let the POST go through until it is
ready.  The user will be happy because the form will be processed quicker,
and will have less of a chance of being rejected over straight Email.

The JSML JAVA Copy request page is at:

               /JDS-1985/jrequest.html

This form will only work for JSML members who have POSTed at least two
weeks before.  That is because it takes about two weeks for the POST to
be processed and the user granted permission to use the Request page.
If the form does not recognize your Email address, then one of the
    following has occurred:

    1. You were never a JSML member.
    2. You are a member, but you are using a different Email address than
the one you used during the POST.
    3. You are no longer on the JSML list because you have been pruned from
the list (You need to rePOST).
    4. There is a problem, contact the JSML moderator.

End of FAQ.
